General Troubleshooting Tips

Before diving into LED indicators or reset procedures, try the following:

Understanding & Troubleshooting LED States

Connection Status LEDs

LED Behavior Meaning
Blinking Yellow (initial) Ready to onboard
Solid Blue Bluetooth connected, not yet connected to WiFi
Blinking Yellow (during pairing) Connecting to WiFi
Blinking Blue Connected to WiFi, attempting to reach server
Green/Blue Alternating Pairing window open; finalizing connection
Solid Green Connected - SLC is connected to Rachio or a different Matter platform

Connectivity Troubleshooting with Connection Status LEDs

Power Light is Off (Controller Not Powering On)

If the SLC does not power on and progress to blinking yellow when plugged in, the outlet is most likely not providing power to the SLC.

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

Stuck on Blinking Yellow

If the SLC is stuck blinking yellow and does not progress to a solid blue light when attempting to connect, there may be a problem with Bluetooth on your mobile device.

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

Stuck on Solid Blue

If the SLC is solid blue and fails to progress to blinking yellow during pairing, it is either not receiving WiFi information from your mobile device, or the WiFi information being relayed to SLC by your mobile device is not compatible with SLC.

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

Stuck on Blinking Yellow During Connection Attempt

If SLC is stuck on blinking yellow during connection and fails to progress to blinking blue, it’s possible the WiFi signal is still not strong enough, or there are router settings or blocked ports that are preventing the controller from connecting.

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

Stuck on Blinking Blue

If SLC is stuck on blinking blue, it is connected to the WiFi network but is having trouble reaching the Rachio server.

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

Stuck on Green/Blue Alternating

If the controller flashes green/blue alternating for an extended period and never gets to solid green, or if it does progress to solid green but does not appear in the Rachio App, it’s most likely the controller was onboarded outside of the Rachio App onboarding flow. This means the SLC was connected directly to your Matter hub (Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, etc.)

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

Solid Green - Can't Pair to Rachio OR Not Visible in Rachio App

If the controller's LED is solid green, it is connected to Rachio, or another Matter platform.

If you can't connect SLC to Rachio, or if you can't see the SLC in the Rachio App after attempting to connect, it's likely the SLC is already connected to a different Matter-enabled smart home app (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, etc.). Refresh the Rachio app to see if SLC appears. If not, try the troubleshooting steps below to connect SLC to Rachio:

Firmware Update LEDs

If you recently tried to update the firmware on your SLC, you can track its progress using the LED states below.

LED Behavior Meaning
Green/Yellow Firmware downloading
Purple Firmware installing
Solid Yellow WiFi not connected; attempting to reconnect
Blinking Blue WiFi connected; attempting to reach server
Green Firmware updated successfully and reconnected

Troubleshooting Steps to Try if Firmware Update Fails:

  1. Power cycle your router.
  2. Power cycle the controller.
  3. Retry the update.
  4. If the update still fails, it's possible port 443 on your WiFi router is blocked. Contact Rachio Support for further assistance.

Manual Button Actions & LEDs

WiFi Reset

Power Cycle

Factory Reset

Important Notes:

Error State LEDs

The Rachio SLC has several safety features. Their light codes and descriptions are listed below:

LED Behavior Meaning
Solid Orange Overcurrent detected — wiring short or wattage overload
Blinking Red Overtemperature — controller has shut down
Solid Red Self-test failed — power cycle required
Blinking Blue WiFi connected, cannot reach Rachio server — power cycle router
Solid Yellow WiFi saved, cannot connect to network — power cycle router
Solid Yellow (after timeout) Bluetooth timeout — not onboarded in 15 min; power cycle required

Note

Overcurrent and overtemperature alerts are safety features and therefore need to act quickly. If the SLC is required to shut down immediately, it may not have time to trigger email alerts. Subsequently, these events may not appear in the event history if shutdown is too rapid.

WiFi Signal Strength and Maintaining Connection

If your SLC connects to WiFi but frequently falls offline, there is most likely a WiFi strength or range issue causing this intermittent connectivity. You can also follow the steps below to confirm healthy signal strength before initial installation.

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

Lighting Issues (Flickering, Not Turning On)

Flickering Lights

Lights Not Turning On

Overcurrent & Overtemperature Events

Overtemperature

When to Perform a Reset

Action Use When
WiFi Reset WiFi credentials are changed
Power Cycle Controller is unresponsive or stuck
Factory Reset Full data wipe or ownership transfer
