RF shielding fixed offline problem

The front of my controller is about 90’ from my router and faces in the router direction. The back is about 20’ from my neighbors router. My controller would work fine for a couple days then drop offline, sometimes multiple times a day. I happen to have a piece of 16 oz. ( 24 gauge ) roofing copper that was just a little larger than the controller which I placed behind the controller to act as an RF shield from my neighbors router. It’s been solid online for a week now. I suspect a few sheets of aluminum foil would work. Any metal with good conductivity.

Make sure that your 2.4ghz is on channel 1, 6 or 11, and make sure that it’s on a different channel to your neighbour.

Use wifiman from Ubiquito Networks to find out as to who uses what channels, and as to the signal strength.

That’s a great app. I learned a lot about my RF situation. The controller has been solid online for over 2 weeks but I changed the 2.4 ghz channel just for added measure since the router that was causing the interference was on the same channel (1).

With the power of wifi 6 and 7 these days, along with housing density, these types of issues can become very common. It is crazy the amount of signal interference exists out there and people don’t realize how much it can affect your own wifi signal. Setting channels is beyond 90% of the population, but makes a HUGE difference in congested areas!
