I was pleased to see this morning’s email from Rachio announcing integration with the Tempest weather station, IF PURCHASED FROM RACHIO. What about those of us who already own both devices? How do we integrate the two devices (which apparently requires a special code)?

I agree. I was one of the Kickstarter funders of the original Weatherflow units. I’d love to see it integrated.

Following for the same answer. I’m waiting to hear back from customer service.

Yeah, this is so strange. What is the point of making this an exclusive for buying the Tempest through Rachio? It’s not like people who already own one are going to buy another just to unlock it early. This isn’t really an incentive, just a punishment.
post by bobafetts3 on Jun 6, 2022
I saw the integration on the app update, and instantly went to go figure out how to add it.
I’ve got mine going to weather underground and then I told Rachio to use my PWS. But having it all integrated without that step would be just as good.
post by prushing on Jun 6, 2022
Yeah looks like they want to try and get the previous users to pay for the integration work. I’m using my PWS but I’d love to just do it directly but I’m not interested in paying an additional cost for it.
post by Jdmac on Jun 6, 2022
Not exactly what this means, but here is my latest response from customer service:
"This is Ana G. from Rachio Customer Support. Thank you for reaching out!
This has been escalated to the engineering team in order to get the 6-digit code you might be missing to properly integrate the Tempest on the Rachio App.
Once I have an update for you, we will let you know but for now, since this will also require an app update release, I can’t provide a time frame on when will this be resolved.
Thank you for the time and patience, we really appreciate it!"

I do not have a Tempest at this time. Curious on your opinions on it before and after integration. How well does it integrate within the Google Assistant environment? How is their app, forecasting, etc.? Curious how it integrated within Rachio?

I heard the following from Rachio:
This has been escalated to the engineering team in order to get the 6-digit code you might be missing to properly integrate the Tempest on the Rachio App.
Thank you for the time and patience, we really appreciate it!
I read this as Rachio having to patch its app to permit integration for those who already owned the Tempest weather station. Hopefully, I am correct and will advise as soon as I learn more.
post by BBQnBEER on Jun 6, 2022
I’d like to know more about how this integrates with Rachio. Are we gonna pay $300 for the Tempest to tell Rachio water/don’t water? Or will Rachio make decisions to water more or less based on things like temperature, humidity, rainfall, and anticipated rainfall?
post by Gadgetrex on Jun 6, 2022
Too early to say, though my assumption is the Rachio will pull its weather (forecast) data from Tempest, rather than the service it defaults to ( Weather.com or similar?) The best part, from my perspective, is the Rachio will know whether or not I received rain at my house without the need for a rain sensor (the
Tempest will serve as the rain sensor). If the algorithm is good enough, it may even be able to adjust the amount of watering based on the rainfall leve.

BBQnBEER](https://community.rachio.com/t/rachio-tempest-integration-with-existing-tempest-station/34179 "Load parent post")
Using it for a bit as a PWS, it has been a lot better for scheduling. Depending on where you live, you can have lots of rain at your house and a few miles to the nearest station it may not rain. So while the hyper local or whatever they call it is ok, it doesn’t do a great job at tracking the actual rain amounts. The Tempest has given accurate results for me and the forecasts have been spot on.
The one downside is it doesn’t seem to update the actual rain amounts in Rachio app until 12AM. Hopefully this integration will change that and make it real-time between the 2.
post by BBQnBEER on Jun 6, 2022
I live in Southern California where rain = 0. So water/no water based on precipitation doesn’t really help me much. BUT if Rachio made watering choices based on other weather factors then it would give me some additional benefit.

Ha! I missed the email but saw the release notes on Android app and purchased the Tempest weather station from WeatherFlow store. I guess I will have to return and buy it from Rachio? That’s kind of an odd requirement for Rachio.

That will surprise me a bit if it HAS to be purchased from Rachio. I guess we will see when those that have asked Rachio support about it.

I would hope that purchasing through Rachio is not a requirement. I tried placing an order today from Rachio only to find that they do not currently have any shipping options to Canada.
I can place an order directly from WeatherFlow, but I will wait to hear how Rachio plans to support existing Tempest Weather System owners that do not purchase from their store.

Another current-Tempest-owner here.
To me the email read as: Rachio will give folks who purchase a Tempest through them early access to this integration for free. When the integration ships, it might cost extra.

They are still working through it, but looks like everyone with a Tempest will be eligible:

Been using my Tempest for over a year as my PWS. Have it set in Rachio too. What am I missing with this update ??? It already works fine
post by Gene on Jun 7, 2022
Seems like a nice feature for new personal weather station owners. This integration essentially bypasses WU’s weeklong QC process and steps required to first get your data to WU to begin with.
I still get many people reaching out, asking their data to be added to pwsweather, simply because their WU station was just created and not yet visible on Rachio / 3rd party map.
For those who already use tempest via WU, direct integration is unlikely to yield more than what you already have, at least at this time.
post by bobbyD on Jun 7, 2022
It’s always good to eliminate the extra cloud in the middle, and depending which API this integration uses, there might not be much of a cloud at all.
post by scunny on Jun 7, 2022
Thanks to Gene I’ve been enjoying this integration for about a year. I likewise would love to see a direct “local” integration without the cloud.
Wondering if there’d be a local connection to the Tempest hub. Any thoughts on this?
post by fpuig on Jun 7, 2022
I’m in the same boat here, I currently have my Tempest talking to the Rachio controller via WU.
Just sent a support request for the “integration code”.
This is a weird approach from Rachio.
post by Gene on Jun 7, 2022
bobbyD](https://community.rachio.com/t/rachio-tempest-integration-with-existing-tempest-station/34179 "Load parent post")
@bobbyD Probably standard WF api. Rachio doesn’t use weather data directly on the controller, all of the higher logic is handled in the Rachio cloud.
@scunny I doubt it, at least at first. Weather data would need to be routed to the cloud by the controller anyway, as it doesn’t have much local processing power dedicated to it at this time. With time, it may be possible that things like wind skip / pause would be handled locally.
@fpuig I’m sure this is mainly a cross promotion at this time. Wonder if the code ends up being the last 6 digits of the tempest mac address, or something similar. For now it’s likely mainly needed to help Rachio request the station info from the tempest.
post by Kunci on Jun 8, 2022
Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. I live in Hungary (EU), I have had a Tempest device for more than a year. I would like to use this integration directly in the Rachio app (currently I can send Tempest data to Rachio via WU). I updated the app. I also found the option where the Tempest device can be configured but asking for the integration code.
In the newsletter, Rachio wrote that this integration is worth 50 usd. I wrote to customer service that I would like to buy the integration code for 50 usd, but they replied that they do not ship Tempest device to my country. But I already have Tempest. I don’t want to buy another Tempest device, just a code to use. I wrote this to support, but they haven’t responded yet.
post by bobbyD on Jun 8, 2022
Good thinking. It’s not I tried tempest device id, station id, mac, serial number and a few other 6 digit numbers I could find and none worked. Lol

I am not sure if Tempest Weather System by WeatherFlow | Rachio changed (it seems like it might have), but I am seeing the following.
Special early access to this new integration (a $50 MSRP) is only available for those who purchase a Tempest on rachio.com.
This would seem to indicate buying the Tempest from Rachio gets the integration for free. Existing or buying it elsewhere would need to pay $50 for the integration.

Honestly, I don’t have a problem if Rachio is trying to monetize their partnership, but they will need to bring something better to the table than current WU integration Although, that’s not what Rachio support implied in the post I shared above.

I decided to pull the trigger and get one. I already got my order confirmation which has an integration code. This code does not look like a MAC address. My interpretation is that the code is what will actually unlock the Tempest integration in the Rachio app.

post by drew_thayer on Jun 8, 2022
Hi everyone. As always, thank you for your engagement with our community. We understand and apologize for the confusion. We are iteratively releasing a new weather feature set that will integrate the WeatherFlow Tempest station through a direct api-to-api integration and use its data, from your yard, as a full replacement weather source. In a future release, it will also serve as a real-time temperature, rain, and wind sensor that can adjust schedules, which will not be available through WI+ because the interpolated weather service doesn’t have access to real-time on-site weather metrics – this will be for Tempest only.
Some context for this feature might help. As you all know, Rachio controllers come standard with WI+ with the option to integrate single stations through Weather Underground, an excellent weather service that suits the needs of many of our customers. Rachio will never charge for this ongoing weather service.
However, some of you prefer to get weather from your yard for a variety of reasons, including variable micro-climate weather and long distances to reliable weather stations, and may be excited about real-time weather metrics driving schedules from a trusted sensor. To satisfy this group of customers we have built an in-depth integration with the WeatherFlow Tempest station to leverage yard-specific, reliable sensor data for more accurate weather and to build real-time features that wouldn’t be excellent without a fully integrated weather station.
This new weather feature set that goes beyond the standard WI+ and PWS support will be for sale for anyone that wants to purchase it in a future release. Currently, it is only available through rachio.com as a gift with purchase of a Tempest weather station to control the sale of this new feature set.
We have finished the integration as a full weather source at this time and we’re beginning work on a follow-up release that will include real time weather features. At that time, we’ll make it available to purchase in-app for people that purchase the Tempest outside of rachio.com.
This new feature set is not a subscription. And, everyone can also continue to use WI+ and integrate a limited set of their Tempest data through Weather Underground as a PWS if they prefer not to purchase this integration.
That all said, we understand that many of you have been with us for a long time and may have already purchased a Tempest elsewhere, and given this feature set is still being developed, we’d love your feedback to help us build great new features enabled by a weather station. If you already have a Tempest and want to participate, DM me.

@drew_thayer Sounds like a fundamental change on how controllers currently operate.
Will this be handled in the cloud, or would local network settings need to make sure that tempest and rachio are on the same network? For example my current IoT devices (like Rachio) are on a separate wifi network which only allow internet access, without ability to see any other local devices (similar to a standard Guest network).
Don’t use Tempest at this time, running older 5-in-1 Acurite sensor(s), mainly because they are easier to calibrate for rain acuracy. That being said, I’m getting excited about Tempest integration. Once real-time support is up an running count me as a customer
post by Linn on Jun 9, 2022
I didn’t get the email from Rachio, but am also interested in the Tempest. I really dislike that my 5-in-1 Acurite can’t get the date and time from it’s internet connection, and hiccups back to Jan 1 of some year back almost every time the power goes out for bit (but not EVERY time of course – just likes to do it when I’m traveling!!!) and then thinks it rained miles of water.
post by Gene on Jun 9, 2022
Yes, alas @Linn was the last one I’ve recommended 5-in-1 to. Acurite’s quality took a real downturn, and they seem to be racing to the bottom.

I am not sure if you are asking about Rachio or Tempest. I presume you are asking about Tempest since this is what the thread is. I do not have one quite yet. It is on order though. I have been eyeing it for a while now. Knowing that it integrates with Rachio put it over the edge to get. I really like the idea of it being high-tech, smart, no moving parts, and not seeming to need to change the batteries every year (or whatever). I am sure once I get it and it is all set up, I will wish for more things. This means I will probably be involved in their community to some degree. From what I see, it seems that most people that have one here really like it. Like everything else, I am sure some do not like it. I am seeing on Amazon that it was given a 4.5 from 759 reviews (77% are a 5). It seems to me that those having issues are the biggest percent to rate. I rarely rate things myself even if having issues as I work with the company or community to resolve.
post by scunny on Jun 10, 2022
I’ve had one for about a year and love it. The forecast accuracy is spot on and the lack of moving parts and solar power is a huge plus. In addition the the Rachio integration I also use in with my smart home “Hubitat” for a number of other purposes.
post by scunny on Jun 10, 2022
Does anyone know if you can share this integration between 2 accounts? In other words, if 2 neighbors each had a Rachio and they wanted to split the cost of the Tempest could they each link to the same Tempest?
post by julianm on Jun 10, 2022

@Gerardv514 my only complaint about the Tempest is that it won’t detect long periods of very light / misty rain.
Otherwise, it’s easy to set up, not bad on the eyes, and so far has been much more accurate for my spot than the guesses interpolated from the official stations.
post by ritchierich on Jun 11, 2022
This isn’t possible in the current version. My next door neighbor has a Rachio as well using my Tempest and I asked the same question to @drew_thayer via PM and this was his response…

julianm](https://community.rachio.com/t/rachio-tempest-integration-with-existing-tempest-station/34179 "Load parent post")
I’ll have to watch for that and see if mine picks it up. I’ve only had thunderstorms since it has been up.
The biggest challenge to get accurate results is installation location. I can’t get good wind readings without a tall pole and that would probably add vibration that would hurt the rain accrucy. I ended up just using the universal mount that they sell. I put it on the fascia in a spot with full sun and used the install option to extend away from the roof to help keep the temperature readings accurate.
Rain is close enough that I don’t need to try and measure with a rain gauge and the rest of the measurements match others in the area. It’s been a lot better than just relying on Rachio to figure out how much it has rained. In the past I’ve had to watch the schedule because of isolated rain dropping a bunch in 1 spot and then it still wanting to water.
I got my code and added it. Will report feedback.
post by prushing on Jun 14, 2022
@drew_thayer Everything works great for the integration and don’t have any real issues that break it but here are the small issues I’ve seen.
- Any time I click on the Tempest Weather station, it asks for my location info … android
- Current temp is rounded up if the actual temp has a decimal point, so 87.3 shows as 88, Tempest will round based on .5 and then shows the decimal when you click to view the detailed data
- Wind speed seems to match with the rounding but it changes too much so couldn’t confirm that
- In the schedule view, when you click on the day to view the precipitation amount this no longer is updated throughout the day as it does with the hyper-local. Normally it will show updated rain chance and amount.
- It doesn’t appear that the day / schedule is updated until 12AM, so I know some rachio users that run their schedule at 12AM so it could affect their schedule starting while it updates.
8 days later
post by drew_thayer on Jun 22, 2022
Thanks for the observations.
- We know about the rounding and double-rounding issues resulting in mismatched temp readings, and we’re working with WeatherFlow on solving those.
- I wasn’t aware of the Schedule View issue, so thanks for that! I’m going to investigate.
- You are right about 12AM schedules. This is independent of the addition of Tempest. We should probably strongly advise against 12AM starts, and give the server a few minutes to ingest the new data… folks who want to run at 12AM will have a better experience running at 12:15 for example.

note on vibrations: I’ve had good success with mine mounted to a 1" (nominal) galvanized pole, it sits ~6’ above my garage roof and is mounted with two, two-screw EMT brackets into the side of the garage (brackets from electrical section of hardware). Both wind and rain seem to be accurate with this setup. Wind accuracy would surely be a little better if the pole were 20 ft tall, but I haven’t put the time in to build that, and most folks probably wont. But it would be pretty sweet.
post by bobafetts3 on Jun 27, 2022
I’ve got mine mounted on the back fence. Only have few vibration issues with it mounted on an 8’ 1" galvanized pole. One of the issues came from when I noticed the fence post needed some extra support as it was breaking out of the footing, and the other one was from when the local owl thought it would have been a nice place to look for mice for about a week.
Tempest with their rain check normally helps knock out the random vibration issues.

Perhaps I am missing some sort of special feature with integrating Rachio directly to the Tempest? When I purchased my Rachio, I got a new weather station (Tempest) at the same time because the old one from 15 years finally cracked. At the time, it seemed that if I bought the Tempest from Rachio at the same time, it was an older model. I wanted the newest model Tempest, so I bought it from eBay (cheaper than Amazon). Then I set my two Rachio controllers to get my personal weather info from WeatherUnderground where my Tempest is reporting data. Easy to do.
post by tmcgahey on Aug 24, 2022
I just got mine in the mail and will be setting up shortly, but there is a code that needs to be entered into Rachio for the integration. I believe there is a more direct integration, but at this time, it is only when bought through Rachio.
post by F4NavyPilot on Aug 24, 2022
So are you not interested in having the Rachio get your weather information through WeatherUnderground? Maybe I am misunderstanding something.
post by tmcgahey on Aug 24, 2022
I’m not 100% sure, but I think with the code, Rachio might directly sync with Tempest. Not 100% sure yet until I get it set up and play with it. I can’t see any other reason for the Rachio/Tempest partnering, or what the code would do…
From Rachio Website
“How does it work? After you purchase your new weather station, we’ll send you an integration code for you to use in your Rachio app. After that, you simply need to set your Tempest as a weather source and you’re good to go.”

Ok, yes best to play with it first. I registered my Tempest with WeatherUnderground simply for the purpose that I went into Rachio and told it to get data from my weatherstation. It seems to work great. As for looking at the weather, I use the Tempest app instead of WeatherUnderground. Frankly, I don’t what additional benefit I might get if the Rachio connects directly to Tempest.
Oh and to add, I guess if Rachio / Tempest connect directly then it gets real time information, but since WU updates my station every 3 minutes, I am not sure that is much of a benefit for direct connection. Not sure.

Terrible, terrible business acumen.
post by tmcgahey on Sep 29, 2022
I feel like Rachio spelled it out pretty clearly on their website…If you purchased through Rachio, there would be no fee as a code is sent. Months ago there was talk of offering codes to those who bought Tempest prior to integration, but I have no idea where that went…
Weather data from your own backyard makes Rachio even better
You can now see Tempest data in the Rachio app and use your Tempest as the weather source for your smart sprinkler controller. Special early access to this new integration (a $50 MSRP) is only available for those who purchase a Tempest on rachio.com.
How does it work? After you purchase your new weather station, we’ll send you an integration code for you to use in your Rachio app. After that, you simply need to set your Tempest as a weather source and you’re good to go.
post by RDLinKY on Sep 29, 2022
I submitted an online request via “ https://help.weatherflow.com/hc/en-us/requests/new” to Tempest as suggested on the WeatherFlow website and within a couple of days I received an integration code that allowed my existing Tempest to communicate directly to my new Rachio 3. No costs at all. I purchased my Tempest about 3 years ago directly from WeatherFlow and my Rachio 3 a few weeks ago directly from Rachio.

Did any of you guys get the integration of Tempest with Rachio to work properly? My Rachio iOS app shows that my Tempest is integrated and is being used for hyper-local data. I can see Tempest weather data inside my Rachio app. But, whenever there is a Rain Skip, the Rachio app decides to pick a nearby WUnderground station (not even a Tempest hardware) as the source for rain data. The little notification that explains the reason for the Rain Skip shows the ID for that WUnderground station.
What is the point of integration if Rachio just picks another station on its own?

We’ve had a lot of rain here in Northern California recently so I was able to check this during a rain skip. Mine is working, and it’s choosing my Tempest as expected.

This is interesting. Does the Rachio app mention the correct name of your Tempest station in the Rain Skip notification where it says “XYZ schedule was skipped due to which observed 0.88 inches …”?
My app mentions a nearby WUnderground station name, but takes the observed inches of rain from my Tempest station.

Mine did, yes. My station is named the same as my street, and it showed it correctly. It also noted the correct amount of rain as well. The integration shows up in the app, and I have my WU account reading from my station as well as a WeeWX install.

So what exactly do i get for 30 bucks? Ive owned a tempest for a long while and already use it with weather underground. What would i be gaining with direct integration?
