I waited and I waited for HomeKit compatibility… When it was available I purchased the Rachio 3… Now, I am finding that in my Home app the Rachio is not available with “No Response”… I have cleared this problem twice now and the only way that I can figure out how to do it is to return the controller to factory and set it back up remembering NOT to remove the controller from the app (so as not to lose everything). This method seems to work but only temporarily.

Using the Rachio from the Home app is pretty rudimentary and frankly useless except for manual watering which sort of defeats the point of the smart controller. This still doesn’t change the fact that it’s not working inside HomeKit as it should and as promised…

Is there a fix coming up in a future update?

I am just very curious as to why you feel this way. I am not a HomeKit user myself, and I’ve been wondering what people want to do with it since the Rachio is so automatic on it’s own. I’ve got mine set up with a Flex Daily schedule and it just runs with little monitoring (which is VERY nice since I travel a lot).

The only thing I have come up (without really knowing HomeKit) is that maybe you’d want to do a pause using HomeKit instead of using the Rachio native app.

What am I missing?

I think you may have miss-understood me. I agree with you 100%. Using the homekit app / with Siri really only gives you the ability to say “Hey Siri water my grass”… You don’t have to do that with Rachio3, daily flex and weather intelligence…

However, it’s a advertised feature that should work… Like myself. Many people waited for Homekit integration before buying a Rachio3. Most that did buy a Rachio 3 have since found out that Homekit integration is “Not All That”

Same issue… It never was an issue with iOS 12.1, then it started when upgrading everything to iOS 12.2.

I have friends with a Rachio where it’s not an issue so have been trying to figure out what might be unique in my situation. After seeing your screenshot, I wonder if it’s because we have multiple HomeKit hubs (I see you have a HomePod and an Apple TV). I have a HomePod and Apple TV x2. As a test I just went through the annoyance of resetting it (once again) and adding it to HomeKit and then I just disabled both Apple TVs as far as being used as a hub. Wondering if it’s something going on when one hub hands off to the other and then it gets confused about what happened to the hub.

Anyway, just a theory… might try using just your HomePod as the hub (can’t easily disable the HomePod as a hub, but it’s a setting on Apple TV). Just curious that it’s also happening to you and we both have multiple hubs and all my friends that it works fine with have a single HomeKit hub.

We received a new HomeKit firmware version from our WiFi vendor that could help with a lot of these issues. Will take some time to test and validate. We will inform everyone when it will be released.

Which Wifi Vendor are you using?

I too am seeing intermittent disconnects. The only way to get things working again with HomeKit is a Powercycle. The Rachio App and Web connection work fine and are connected with no problems to the controller.

I am fairly convinced that this may be a channel issue 2.4 vs 5ghz… If we wait for a update from Rachio to work through Apple eco-system, I am confident it will all come out in the wash…

My Rachio 3 has also lost its HomeKit connection. I removed it when it stayed on No Response. Tried adding back and I cannot. Not going to factory reset the controller either - not sure if everything saves and I am not looking forward to having to set everything back up again; zones, schedule, etc. Would be nice to have that functionality again for when we want a specific zone to run. Hopefully an update is issued. Following…

Many people purchased a Rachio 3 because of the promise of HomeKit compatibility. I am beginning to feel mislead by Rachio. This has taken far too long for Rachio to fix. For me, this really tarnishes the confidence I have in Rachio moving forward.

Apple has delivered a new SDK that is very different than the one our vendor implemented themselves. We are integrating it into our firmware and doing regression/validation testing which is very time consuming. As soon as this has been completed we will start to roll the new firmware out.

HomeKit has a non-response issue with numerous devices. The main thing I have found that causes this that when I have my Wifi router configured for both 2.4 and 5 ghz enabled my devices will jump from one freq to another and this makes HomeKit get non-responsive issues. I have disabled the 5 GHz and forces everything to use the remaining 2.4GHz and it cleared up this issue. Also it appears that the base HomeKit controller can be passed between different Apple devices, Apple TVs, iPads, etc… If it moves to a new device and that device cannot see the device you get non-responsive.

A key point to my previous post is that if your using your iPhone to control through HomeKit and you get non-responsive I believe this means that the current HomeKit controller cannot communicate with the device not your iPhone.

You are exactly right. With my Synology router I can assign any connected device to the 2.4 or 5 network. If I assign the Rachio controller to the 2.4 network ONLY, it works and never drops. If I let the router work “smart” like it is designed to the Rachio drops out INSTEAD of working on either network as it is supposed to - and as advertised.

HomeKit is a work in progress and I agree these technologies are new and I have everything Apple eco system and I do not currently own 3rd generation but I do have several other home devices and it is common when APPLE’S update software unfortunately changes sometime occur and it takes awhile for kinks to work themselves out. Further releases of apple’s software will fix disconnect issues just have to be patient. I also found hardwiring larger desktop computers using Ethernet will help with connection issues to HomeKit.

I have the same Homekit no response issue. It worked fine when I bought it last November. Then it stopped working with Homekit (no response) without warning. Reinstalling doesn’t help. It’s frustrating because I chose this product due to Homekit compatibility.

It works great on its own automated, and the Homekit feature is pretty limited, but I like it and want it to work as advertised.

Please help. Your customer support team was initially responsive and then disappeared after a few replies. No one has reached out since.

Hey @da_duggal (and others) - sorry for the silence on the support team’s end. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don’t have much to update at this point. I’m pinging for updates weekly but we’re still waiting on some third party updates before we can make adjustments on our end. this is the best place to stay posted, though - as soon as I have more information this is the first place I’ll come!

Hey @laura.bauman - any news on the ETA for a solution? My R3 became unresponsive in Homekit a few weeks ago. Not having read this thread, I deleted the accessory through my Homekit app and have since been unable to add it back as the app can’t find it. This has obviously been an issue now for over 3 months and I would appreciate being enlightened as to why its taking so long to be resolved. Thank you.

@Anthony - Thank you for the advice. I did consider the factory reset but decided against it as I didn’t want to go through the hassle of setting up my zones all over again. Since I don’t use the feature that often, I decided to leave well enough alone until it is hopefully resolved by the new firmware.

A factory reset will work and you will not lose any zones or settings if you follow the instructions given by Rachio carefully. *Make sure that you connect only to the 2.4 GHz WiFi network…

I have convinced myself that this is actually the problem. *Even though Rachio is supposed to work with 5 GHz and / or 2.4 GHz network’s, it does not… It will lose connection on a 5 GHz network.

I would imagine Apple will Fix Homekit at the next iOS update, probably in September… Then Rachio will be able to update their firmware.

The best thing to do is just wait

Just to update my earlier post, I noticed a pending firmware update for my Gen3 (iro3-firmware-hk-5-630). After the update I attempted to add the controller to HomeKit again. HomeKit no longer detects the controller. The controller does not appear on the Add Accessory screen.

I’ll try again after iOS 13 comes out.

As an update to my post, I updated to both iOS 13 and Gen 3 firmware iro3-firmware-hk-5-630 and still don’t see the controller as an available accessory to be added in the HomeKit app. I have confirmed that my phone and the controller are on the same 2.4GHz wifi network. Any ideas short of completely resetting my controller to get this to work? I must admit to being a little bit disappointed that I’ve waited for the new firmware and iOS and it still doesn’t work. @laura.bauman and @franz - are there any new developments and when can we expect a resolution? Thank you.

Got an update but unfortunately no major changes. We’re working with Apple and a third party on this integration. The fixes we need are mostly controlled by them (and then by us to release firmware when they’re ready.) One of our developers has been in contact with those teams to try and get this resolved. We’re eagerly waiting as well. I’m sorry I don’t have a better solution or date for resolution

If you don’t mind me asking a quick question to clarify @Bgman - you’ve paired Rachio with HomeKit once and then it stopped working and refuses to pop up into HomeKit again? Even after controller reboot (not reset) and iOS device reboot?

post by Bgman on Sep 26, 2019

Sep 2019

That’s correct. It had worked for sometime and then one day the HomeKit app showed the Rachio as being unresponsive. I gave it a few days and then decided to remove the Rachio in the app and reinstall. Thereafter the Rachio has not been seen by the HomeKit app and therefore can’t install it. I have not rebooted or reset the Rachio though I have rebooted the iOS device.

Just got mine today. Got bit by this bug.

I set it up in my kitchen including downloading the firmware and setting up homekit.

Then installed it. Then set up each of three zones.

Then no response in homekit. Deleted it but was unable to add it back in.

It’s fixed now. This is how.

Held down the stop button for 10 seconds as suggested in this forum. Then added it back in. Then was able to add it back into homekit. So far so good but it’s been less than a day.

Two things that I think my have trigged this.

I have a mesh network and set it up next to a different base station then where it is installed. If noticed that sometimes this has been an issue. The other possibility is homekit showed all 8 zones when I first added it in. I then in your app turned off all but three and then set them up. Maybe homekit doesn’t like the groupings of devices changed behind its back. I think this was one of the new homekit features.

I know how frustrating this stuff is. I used to be a Mac tech back in the day.

I tried everything before finding this forum. Besides doing a reset I didn’t know that the phone had to be by the controller to reconnect. Seems it uses Bluetooth or something for that.

The app really could use a better error message other than it’s broken and we are working on it.

Happy to report that everything is working as of 11/4/19 in homekit

Just adding a tally mark here. I’ve had my s3 since May and added it to HomeKit right away.

It hasn’t had an issue until this weekend. It’s not a huge deal to me as it’s winter but I did try to mess with it to get it working (without success.)

It’s just not showing up when I try to add it (I’ve completely memorized the number after entering it so many times…)

But I’ll patiently wait for a fix. As long as it’s available before Spring I’m good…

I just fixed it again but did it differently this time.

Instead of holding the stop button I held down the WiFi button for about ten seconds until the led went white. Then used the radhio app to add it back in.

Got the usual error that I ignored and after a bit more time went by got the message it was added in.

As I did not first delete it from homekit I didn’t have to add it back into homekit and it was connected again. So at least there was one less step to get it working again.

So to sum it up.

Hold down the WiFi button until the led changes color. Use the rachio app to add it back it. Ignore the error message and just wait until it finally says added it. No need to do anything more as homekit shows connected without have to remove and add it back into homekit.

A few months ago I started replacing all my old X10 automation with HomeKit. It’s grown way beyond my old X10 system.

The Rachio was the most recent addition to my automation. I really love it. The weather intelligence setting is awesome. My pump runs a lot less and the wet and soak is great.

Lasted only a few days. It was working until I restarted my WiFi network and everything reconnected except the Rachio. It seems like once the connection is interrupted the Rachio is unable to reconnect without a reset.

I have a bunch of homekit stuff including a hue hub for an outdoor motion sensor. A Lutron hub for all my dimmers. A bunch of LIFX LED lights. A bunch of wemo plugs. An Ecobee thermostat. A logi cicle2 camera. A couple of OMNA cameras. Plus couple of iHome plugs. Only the Rachio is having issues.

Hopefully this info is helpful. I’ll reset the Rachio tomorrow again by pressing the WiFi button as that worked well last time.

Are there any log files that can be accessed?

This is my WiFi network. All basestations are connected by Ethernet. The rachio is less than ten feet from the two bedroom Airports just on the other side of a cbs wall in my garage so gets a very strong signal.

Not sure if this is helpful but I’ve noticed this behavior.

Sometimes I’ll get a no response from some of my homekit devices for whatever reason. Like maybe my internet went down or I had a brief power failure so my WiFi basestations are rebooting or maybe just aliens messing with us humans.

But all my homekit devices will come back online within a short time except rachio. Rachio doesn’t seem able to recover from a brief outage.

The current issues with homekit seem to be related to other homekit or bonjour devices on the network confusing things. Have you changed anything like turned off a printer or maybe upgraded another device?

As the original OP, I am finding that Rachio and Homexit are getting along much better but not perfect… After a network outage and/or reboot, connection is hit or miss…

I will also repeat what I said earlier. Homekit integration is really so limited that I really wouldn’t miss it if I didn’t have it (except getting the grandkids wet with Siri in the summer time :). In my opinion, The Rachio app itself is a work of art compared to Rachio in Homekit.

Any news on a fix?

After being issue free for a while it suddenly is going down constantly.

My AT&T internet has also been having issues the last few days with it going down for short periods of time and I’m really thinking lost to the internet seems to be somehow related. But my WiFi’ is rock solid so don’t know if lost to the internet would have any effect on it.

Hey @Tzterri!

We’re doing our best to push this as much as we can from our end. We believe that the issue is stemming from mesh networked routers. One of our tech partners are going to do some further investigation and let us know what they come up with. Any chance you (and others with HomeKit issues) can let me know if you’re using a Mesh router/network? Apologies if that’s somewhere in this thread and I missed it!

As the OP (original poster of this thread) back in April 2019, I think this bears mentioning again:

The Rachio app is far more capable and is really the only good way to use the Rachio device…

My HomeKit has been working perfectly with Rachio for quite a while now…

Having said that, HomeKit integration doesn’t really offer anything except for quick operation of any given watering zone… I typically use it if I want to get the grand kids wet when they are playing in the yard. That’s about it… You can easily use the Rachio app for that same zone watering - Just as fast…

While HomeKit Integration was promised and should be delivered as promised, I think you will find that it’s all not what it is cracked up to be… Just sayin…

Now, if HomeKit gets better, I may change my mind. But for now, I would advise that you just use the Rachio App and spend your time on other things…

Hello @laura.bauman - sorry, very long thread so I don’t know if I caught all of it, but I have been skimming through it and wanted to provide my data point. I have been having this issue too for a long time (pretty much since I got the device 2 years ago). I saw a post here where you asked if anyone has a mesh network. I do. So that’s one data point I guess. But before or after the latest FW update, I am still getting the No Response, unless I power cycle - then it will be controllable in the Home app for a variable amount of time. It is always available and connected through the Rachio App.

Hey team! This is the latest update I have. This is by no means an official solution, but something our CS and Eng teams are investigating.

It seems that if a HomeKit user doesn’t have Apple TV, HomePod, or a configured iPad on the same network as the Rachio controller at all times, then the controller will go offline in the HomeKit app. This means that if a HomeKit user is using an iPhone and it switches to cellular, the controller will go offline in the HomeKit app. If they are using a HomePod, Apple TV, etc, they have to take the steps to ensure that the Apple device is connected to the exact same band as the Rachio 3 (which means they’ll need to configure their APs at appropriate distance from Rachio 3 and HomeKit device.) It seems that both the HomeKit hub and the Rachio controller need to be on the 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz network. The team found that if the Rachio controller is connected to the 2.4 and the HomeKit hub is connected to the 5.8, the controller will lose connection to HomeKit.

Does this apply to any of you? Again, this is just speculation at this point, but I’m working hard to keep everyone as updated as I possibly can!
\

Jan 2020

First of all - a HomeKit hub must be an Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad (it can’t be an iPhone).

Can the Rachio connect to either 2.4 or 5.8, or is it only able to connect to 2.4?

How does this apply to backup home hubs as well? That is, if I have two apple TVs and a HomePod, only one is “active” at a time - do all the hubs need to be on the same band as the Rachio?

Correct!

Rachio 3 controllers can connect to both, Gen 1 or Gen 2 controllers can only connect to 2.4.

I have three HomePods, an iPad and three Apple TV’s. One is a hub and the others on standby. So is the one that’s the active hub the one that needs to be on the same band or any one of them? That kind of makes a big difference.

This is something we need to confirm with Apple, but the educated guess is that only the Active hub needs to be on the same band. That is not an official answer - just an assumption based on research and knowledge at this time.

In answer to Macsterguy.

Yes having it work in Homekit is worth it.

Besides paying extra for this it is nice to be able to control everything in one place plus when I working in the yard, like finding and fixing sprinkler heads, it’s really helpful to be able to control them using Siri voice commands.

I have three zones. You can give them proper names in homekit so I don’t have to remember which zone is which.

It’s also nice getting the homekit notifications when they run or when they skip due to wind conditions or something.

But mine it once again down and now I’m being sent a replacement Rachio.

I think I may have stumbled upon the trigger that knocks it off of homekit.

I’ve been emailing back and forth with a tech from rachio. One of the things he had me do was give my 5 ghz network a different name than my 2.4 ghz network.

This didn’t fix it but has resulted in learning the trigger that cause homekit to go offline. It is the handshake from when your phone switches from your WiFi and switches to cellular.

Today I received a replacement controller. That also didn’t fix it. I set it up and the first time I left home it went offline. Sometimes it would reconnect when I got back on my WiFi but not always.

I had the controller on the 5 ghz and also my iPhone. After a few more disconnects I switched my phone to the 2.4 ghz WiFi so that I could try adding the controller to the 2.4 ghz WiFi. But got the same disconnect behavior.

But then I told my iPhone to forget the 2.4 ghz WiFi and only use the 5 ghz network. So now the rachio is no longer directly connecting to my phone when I’m home as it is on a different WiFi than my phone is.

So far success, It hasn’t disconnected and I’ve been really trying hard to get it to go offline by turning the WiFi on and off on my iPhone. Actually homekit overall seems to work slighter better like this.

Feb 2020

What happened today I think affirms my previous post.

It went offline in HomeKit sometime after I left my home today and required holding down the Wifi button.

But when I went to update its Wifi I discovered my iPhone had somehow defaulted back to my 2.4 ghz network even though I had told my iPhone to forget about this network after setting up the controller.

Had an unusually hard time getting it working with HomeKit involving pulling its power. Holding down the stop button and holding down the Wifi button. I

Deleted it out of HomeKit and added it back in as the first time it connected in HomeKit it wouldn’t turn on the sprinklers even though it was online and said it did. So I deleted it out of HomeKit and added it back in. Took a very long time for it to show up after hitting add.

Told my iPhone to forget my 2.4 ghz networt. Been in and out of my home today many times and so far it has stayed

RACHIO Advertises it is compatible with 2.4 & 5GHz Networks

They need to fix this… Having said that,

My Rachio connection hasn’t failed in months. It works perfectly in HomeKit. The Rachio controller ALWAYS stays connected to the 2.4Ghz…

All my Apple devices with HomeKit & Rachio Control (My wife and my: 2-iPhones, 2-iPads, 2-MacBook Pro’s) connect via 5GHz. All are able to control Rachio in HomeKit… I get Rachio notifications on all of them (but have turned that off and leave Rachio notifications on).

I think the ONE thing that may cause Rachio (and all of my other network devices - wired and wireless) to work so well on my network is my router: It is a: Synology AT2600ac.

*Out of the box it has a setting called “Auto Connect” where it assigns all wifi devices a network (2.4 or 5GHz)… All by itself. Automatically, when they are connected.

Why it works so well, with ALL my IOT wifi devices AND HomeKit, I don’t know… It just does!

• Rachio • Hue Lights inside and out • Robot Vac • Garage door opener • Door Locks • Eufy camera’s • Ecobee thermostat and more…

Some connect on 2.4GHZ, others on 5GHz. They never drop out and are solid all the time.

I am thankful that “It all Just Works” for me and I believe it is my router. Whatever Rachio (and others) is getting wrong, The Synology is making right…

This may or may not help things along but hopefully it will provide some hints to Rachio and tips to others.

If you are in the market to upgrade your network I can’t recommend Synology highly enough. This router can also be Mesh by adding a Synology companion routers: AT2600ac and/or MR2200ac:

My network does the same thing as far as what uses the 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. But the tech from Rachio had me give each a different name in an effort to fix the issue.

Since separating the two with two different names and putting the Rachio on the 2.4 ghz and my mobile devices on the 5 ghz network it has not gone offline.

The issue does return if I put my phone on the same 2.4 ghz network as the Rachio and then leave me house e a few times.

From the beginning when Rachio became homekit compliant it was supposed to work on both 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. I think it even said that on the outside of the box if I recall… If they can fix that I believe this problem will go away…

I can and have put it on the 5 ghz network so yes it can work on either network.

The issue comes up if my phone and the rachio are on the same network and I leave home and my phone switches from my home wifi to cellular. This will often cause the rachio to go offline until I re-add it back in by holding down the WiFi button or the Stop button.

Yes, So since you can’t select which network the Rachio can join (even though we should be able to as Rachio says we can) and The Rachio Joins the 2.4 GHz network by default, Can you not just forget the 5GHz network on your iPhone and let it join your 2.4GHz network all the time - as a work-around - for now.

*FYI - If you use iCloud sync services the wifi networks your apple devices join are “remembered” and “synced” to other apple devices so as not to require you to put in password all the time - This could cause your iPhone to rejoin the 5GHz network…)

Hey friends! Copying and pasting something here that I posted in another HomeKit thread:

We’re still waiting for some third parties to make changes on their end before some of our changes can be enabled. However, we have been seeing success when users reach out to support@rachio.com to troubleshoot HomeKit issues. We have some theories and hacks on what could be wrong and reaching out to the team allows us to troubleshoot and report any learnings for future fixes.

TLDR; reach out to support to troubleshoot if you’re seeing issues with HomeKit

It definitely has something to do with my mobile devices being on the same 2.4 ghz network as the Rachio and then when I leave my home something causes it to go offline.

All has been well but after I did an update to my cellular Apple Watch it reconnected to my 2.4 ghz network and then when I left home it caused the rachio to go offline requiring holding down its WiFi button.

I’m having the same issue with the Rachio not responding in HomeKit. However:

I have rachio sin November and it was working fine with homekit. Then it requesters firmware update to the 631 and since then no response.

A restarted the device and nothing, now a i deleted it from homekit and can’t add it back, it just stays waiting for the device.

As someone said before I don’t want to delete the device from the rachio app so I won’t lose everything.

Anyone can help?

Same exact issue here. I’ve had zero issues with my Rachio 3 and HomeKit until I installed the 631 firmware last night. I’ve tried reboot it, holding down stop for 10 seconds and reading it, and reconnecting to WiFi. Nothing works.

Stay away from 631 if you haven’t updated yet.

After months and months of trouble free Rachio operation in HomeKit mine is now broken too after this latest last xxx…631 firmware update… Thanks Rachio, nice try.

I am not going to even bother with trying to troubleshoot this just for HomeKit.

Rachio needs to fix this right - once and for all… Sad
