Is the new smart hose timer device compatible with the current API? If so how is it represented compared to a regular rachio controller?

Great question. Currently, the Rachio Smart Hose Timer does not support API access. We have not announced support for the API with this product. As the Product Manager of Rachio Smart Hose Timer software, I am keeping track of these requests. So, I appreciate you sharing your feedback

Is there any way to leverage an inbound email or SMS for triggering this?
I have a connection to my hose bib for my pool filler. I’m using a MySpool float to detect water levels dropping due to splash/evap/etc. Once it hits the defined level, I want to be able to trigger the hose timer to fill for a determined amount (e.g. I know that 50 min of fill time is 1" in my pool roughly).
Right now MySpool sends an SMS and Email, and while I have tried to use IFTTT to receive these messages and act upon them, they do not seem to work and fire off - so wondering if you have a better way to act on these types of inputs or suggestions for a better trigger option ?

Just want to +1 this request.
I use the normal Rachio for sprinklers/drop, but I also have a huge rain catchment cistern which feeds a soaker hose in a nearby bed. That’s what I will use the hose timer for. Would love to have access to that via Home Assistant. The cistern also has a float switch in it to let me know when it’s empty, which would let me automatically pause any schedules for the smart hose timer.

I use Home Assistant for control of all my smart home devices.
If/when the hose timer supports API access, I will purchase at least 2 hose timers to water baskets/pots that my in-ground irrigation does not cover.
Off-topic for this thread, but also +1 for 5GHz support and real-time flow monitoring, too.

I just got my timer in and made the bad assumption that given the WIFI interface, API would be supported out of the box. I make heavy use of the API to pause watering on my current controllers once the water pressure gets too low. Without this ability this timer is of little use to me.

+1 for API Access, and real-time flow monitoring. I want to be able to pause watering for some zones if pressure is low, and for other drip zones stop watering if high flow is measured, which could indicate that one of the emitters may have blown off.

This is really important for a lot of us using other vendor’s moisture sensors (like Ecowitt soil sensors) in our garden beds. I already have a bunch of these sensors scattered around various zones to control my main Rachio 3 via home assistant already.
For a hose timer that is most likely used for raised beds and flower beds, this is actually a much more relavent.

@dane any update on the possibility of API access for the smart hose timer? If you still need to see more interest, I know lots of hubitat users that are interested and will have to send them this way… also, while I have you, plug for allowing the API to set a run duration of “indefinite” so that it stays on until turned off (to leave my deer sprinklers on until a person is detected nearby)

I too would like access to the API functions for the hose timer. I bought the product assuming it had that functionality only to be disappointed that it doesn’t. It is a bit of a let down that it wasn’t a feature out of the box.

Agreed. From a customer perspective, it is reasonable to expect that the hose timer would have API support, on the basis that the other Rachio products have API support. The inconsistent experience is disappointing and leaves me uncertain as to what to expect from Rachio moving forward.

Created an account just to +1 this. I just bought a couple of the Orbit b-hyve smart hose timers but if these get added to the API before my return window closes, I will definitely be switching to rachio. Fingers crossed.

I just ordered two to replace my b-hyve and recieved the first one today.
Excited to set it up so I could have it all on the same platform as my Rachio for my lawn, with weather intelligence and Home Assistant (api) integration.

Haha well all I meant was I’m hoping for some acknowledgement that the API is coming before my return window runs out.
Ultimately I’ll probably make the switch anyway as I like the form factor on the rachio and everything…but getting the API thing worked out would seal the deal.

I just bought the device, assuming it is supported by the homeassistant rachio integration. The built-in rachio integration of HA is the main reason why I bought this instead of a different brand. It is very disappointed to find out the device is not supported. I will have to return it to get something else that is supported by HA.

+1 on API bought 5 to use with Home Assistant next to the Rachio 3 controller…will return them now and just have to come up with a diff solution… Not even seeing the one I opened for testing show up in the browser app as I prefer it over the phone, disappointed with this, otherwise love Rachio!!!

Agree, sadly seen this too many times…either with internal forked solutions diff teams etc… ends up destroying products and/or their interoperability! The phone app has it place, but prefer the web app (seems to be not supported for the hose timer) and want an overview and ability to script against an API in Home Assistant this to further fine tune my usage. Really hoping all this will get added!!

Hi @lnjustin! We’re definitely watching the topic and keeping track of the replies. We do not have anything to share regarding open API support. I know that a couple of people asked about the Smart Hose Timer on the web app. Regarding web app support for Smart Hose Time I can say with certainty that we do not plan to support new features on the web app, this includes the Smart Hose Timer. Please refer to this post by Franz here. I know that this is not what you want to hear, but I can confirm that our focus is on our iOS and Android apps.

That’s a very disappointing update. Was really hoping we would at least hear that adding the API support is on the road map…or something.
As mentioned above, I am currently using two b-hyve hose timers. I actually ordered one rachio timer since then in hopes of sending the b-hyve timers back.
Looks like it’ll be the rachio that gets sent back…

I just received my smart hose timer today and am returning it after coming across this thread. I was under the impression Rachio supported all of their devices via API and their webapp. This is really disappointing. I like the product but am exchanging for a B-Hyve. Wish I would have known about this earlier so I could have saved myself the trouble.

For me, I want to use the timer in homeassistant. Currently there is a HA integration for rachio. However, the API support does not exist for this timer, I cannot even add the device to app.rach.io/location so HA integration does not show the device.

Rachio - I don’t want to walk around my house opening apps on my phone to do things like turn on a sprinkler. I went through a lot of trouble to turn my entire house into a smart house with home assistant. I don’t want to use your app, ever.
With that being said…I returned my “smart timer” this morning, got credited back almost immediately by amazon and ordered a b-hyve with next day delivery with the difference in $. Can’t wait to integrate it into home assistant!

I’m buying a smart hose controller but I’m going to have to buy that B* product since Rachio does not have API access. (Home Assistant). Sorry, but this is
a required feature for “smart” products in 2023.

No it wasn’t an oversight. Yes we wanted to get the product out this Spring for customers. This has been on the roadmap for a fast follow on feature.
We’re releasing Shared Access and Push Notifications in the next few weeks and will then be working on integrations and api access, released shortly after.

@lnjustin are you looking to just not have to pass the open duration as a required attribute, or do you want to actually have it so the valve is open indefinitely? We’re working on some requirements now.

For my use case to control motion-activated deer sprinklers, the valve would actually be open indefinitely. The deer sprinkler regulates the flow of water in response to motion. The rachio hose timer however will cut off the water when a human is detected by my cameras, to prevent the human from being sprayed.
If it won’t work to allow indefinite running, perhaps you could at least allow a long runtime, on the order of 12 hours. That would at least allow me to turn the deer sprinklers on for long periods of time, like from dusk to dawn, without having to repeatedly send ‘open’ commands to the hose timer and reduce battery life.

Chris,
I would use the smart timers for some mist systems i have.
Basically would want small “on/open” times.
It appears from playing with the app that i can do it so i guess my feature request is to not put a small limit on the api for the open time.
Basically, keep the ability to open for say 5 seconds thru the api when ready.

I just bought it, set it up, and now I can’t figure out how to use it in Homekit or Home Assistant. Are 1x of those not supported??

This is very disappointing, and changes my opinion about Rachio. I bought the device because I saw there was an integration in Home Assistant. I did not suspect that it did not apply to the hose timer.
I’ll be patient for another month or two, but if API support does not come by then I’ll be trashing the unit and buying something that actually fits into my plans.

As a reminder Rachio does not officially offer customer support for our open API. This is to say that Rachio’s Customer Support team doesn’t offer specific API information or troubleshooting. With that in mind, if anybody has questions or issues related to Smart Hose Timer API you can ping me in this thread. I’ll reach out to our Engineers, but you should expect a 48 business hours response time.
Please post any feedback or feature requests in this thread, also. Is there something specific that you want to do with the API that isn’t available? I’d love to hear about it.

(1) I suspect that the “detectFlow” field indicates whether the valve is configured to detect flow, not whether the value is currently detecting flow. Is that right?
(2) The flowDetected field in the reportedState seemingly indicates whether flow was detected the last time the valve watered. But that watering session may have ended already, right? So, the flowDetected field in the reportedState does not seem to indicate whether flow is currently detected.
Am I missing something? That seems like something that the API would provide access to…If the API does not currently provide this information, please consider it a feature request.
It would be great to have the reportedState include:
(1) currentWateringAction; and
(2) nextWateringAction
with the same fields as the lastWateringAction, as applicable.
(1) Is the most important, though, as nextWateringAction can be derived from the dayView part of the API. But I don’t think currentWateringAction could be. In a perfect world, you could check to see if the lastWateringAction is still ongoing accounting for its start time and duration, but there’s no way to know if that is in fact the case, e.g., user could have manually stopped, flow might not be detected, etc.

Sorry, I missed this. I’ll answer the questions that I currently know and then work with the team to answer what I don’t know. The “detectFlow” field does indicate that the valve is configured to detect flow while “flowDetected” indicates if the valve’s flow sensor detected water flow.
I will need to get back to you on detecting flow for the current watering. I’ve captured your request to have “currentWateringAction” and “nextWateringAction”.

I’m also here for Home Assistant integration. I see this thread was started back in June, is API integration for hose timers still planned? I bought these specifically to integrate them with Home Assistant, and just learned that there’s no API support for these devices. I’ll hang on if this is just around the corner, otherwise, I’ll be switching to a B-hyve system.
Happy to beta test if that’s an option.

Like many on this thread I’m looking to integrate my Rachio hose valves with Home Assistant. It could be that the Home Assistant integration hasn’t yet added support to for these since the API for these is apparently quite new, but when I setup the Rachio integration the API responds with an empty array of devices[]. I do have two hose valves configured that show up in the app (but not at app.rach.io, which may be part of the problem).

From the little I’ve looked at it, the hose timer uses totally different endpoints than the controller API. It’s not going to just show up without significant changes to the HomeAssistant Rachio integration.

Thank you for your patience. You are not seeing the devices because app.rach.io/ only supports controllers. Our Smart Hose Timer API is new and on a different host. There is a note about that in our API documentation (you can read that here). It does not look like an integration for Home Assistant has been built, yet.

Hi there,
I’d like to be able to integrate my Smart Hose Timer with IFTTT. I have a weather station with a soil moisture sensor and I’d like to have my Hose Timer activate when the soil moisture falls below a certain percentage, and have the Hose Timer turn off once the soil moisture rises above a certain percentage. Is this possible using IFTTT?

Another request that I think might be useful…the ability to enable/disable a hose timer schedule through the API. The current method of finding and skipping individual runs is ok, but also kind of a pain. Would it be possible to add enable/disable schedule, or even make the createSkipOverride endpoint act like its delete counterpart where not providing a timestamp would skip all upcoming runs?

@dane the cloud-rest.rach.io site is showing a 404. Is it just temporarily down, or did y’all for some reason already pull the new site down?
I tried both on my WiFi, and knowing sometimes my network blocks some sites, 5G on my phone, after confirming my smart hose timer valve was online.
Also, is there any way to control the valve locally, instead of having to go through y’all’s servers? (For Home Assistant specifically, as I see you have a 1700 query limit on the cloud calls.)
